METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods for removing chewing gum from concrete depends on how long the gum has been stuck there and the level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the gum was left not long ago and it hasn’t penetrated the surface yet, we are sometimes able to get it off by covering it with ice until it freezes, then scraping the gum off with a metal putty knife.

The ice forces the gum to freeze into a workable consistency compared to a gooey and sticky mess. Once that happens, we slide a metal putty knife or scraper under the gum residue. After that we slide the scraper very slowly under the gum and the whole piece should peel right off the concrete.

The above method is only possible with brand new gum.

When we remove chewing gum that is already black, or is already smashed down into the concrete surface, we use a hot water pressure washer with the heat turned up to 200 Degrees to melt the chewing gum. For this type of gum removal, we will not use high pressure because that will sometimes damage the surface of the concrete!

Our team never uses any more pressure than necessary to clean commercial concrete. These types of surfaces can be damaged a lot easier than most people think, especially if they’re only 1-2 years old. Concrete can require up to 100 years to cure completely.
